Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum
A magnificent building that deserves a long look, and that’s before you’ve even entered. It contains a staggering 8, 000 items for your enjoyment, these are anything from civic art to World War II planes suspended from the ceiling. There are various types of armour, and some amazing things to see in the natural history section which go back thousands of years.
The name comes from Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Scotland’s most famous and talented architect. There are plenty of his creations in and around Glasgow for you to enjoy including The Glasgow School of Art, The Lighthouse, Mackintosh House, Mackintosh Church at Queen’s Cross and finally Scotland Street School. Machintosh House itself reassembles the Glasgow home interiors when they lived at 78 South Park Avenue in the early part of the 20th century. You’ll get to see their eclectic and distinctive style with a minimalistic austerity that was years before its time. It’s been put together with all its original contents, so you can see how it would have looked.
This beautiful museum was designed by Zaha Hadid, and inside, as well as paintings you’ll find all sorts of trains, cars, planes and skateboards. There’s around 3,000 items here and the museum is a perfect setting for Glasgow’s transport history.
St Mungo Museum Of Religious Life And Art
You’ll find this interestingly named museum in Cathedral Square and covers world religions of every kind. You’ll find Islamic Calligraphy sculptures as well as a beautifully designed Zen Garden. It’s food for thought in some lovely, tranquil surroundings.
